CA Voter ID Initiative Hits 712,000 Signatures In Just 2 Months

Written by Mike Hernandez

REDDING–The California Voter Initiative has already reached over 712,000 signatures of the 874,641 signatures needed to force the issue on the 2026 statewide ballot in just the first two months according to CA State Assemblyman Carl DeMaio, R-75, San Diego (Chair Reform California) speaking in front of a crowd of 50 petition gatherers at Faith Community Church, 2570 S. Bonneyview Road.

The goal is to hit one million signatures by Dec. 31 said DeMaio. Polling shows that if the Voter Initiative qualifies for the 2026 general election ballot, it will pass overwhelmingly. To sign the CA Voter ID Initiative petition go to: VoterIDPetition.org.

“We have collected 10,000 Voter ID petitions during the last 48 hours,” said DeMaio.

Those wishing to volunteer for the CA Voter ID Initiative 2026 campaign go to VoterIDVolunteer.org or call (619) 354-7257. Over 18,000 volunteers are trained and activated statewide to collect signatures. The goal for the campaign is a “grass roots” army of 26,000 volunteers. Those wishing to contribute can do so at VoterIDInitiative.org.

Why Require Voter ID?

California State Representative Carl DeMaio has authored a state constitutional amendment to impose a Voter ID requirement for all future elections in California. Because DeMaio’s proposal is a constitutional amendment, once approved by the votes, state politicians will be compelled to comply with it for all future elections–no exceptions.

“We will not have fraud-free or fair elections in California until we pass a Voter ID law and enact other important reforms to restore election integrity in our state,” said DeMaio. “Passing Voter ID in California will be a game-changer–with the potential to provide the biggest and quickest impact on how our state is run.”

DeMaio’s amendment requires:

  1. Verification of Citizenship: Election officials would be required to verify the citizenship of an individual before adding them to the state’s voter rolls.
  2. Accurate Voter Lists: Election officials would be required to maintain accurate voter rolls and remove any ineligible voters before mailing ballots out.
  3. Photo ID to Vote: Voters would provide a government issued ID for in-person voting or provide the last four digits of a driver’s license for voting by mail. This allows elections officials to complete a full verification of the identity of each voter, minimizing risk of voter fraud.

Signature Validity Reaches 88 Percent

CA Voter ID Initiative officials have reported that 88 percent of the petitions turned in have been verified.

Supreme Court Upholds Texas Election Map on Dec. 4

The U.S. Supreme Court ordered late on Dec. 4 that a redrawn election map expected to increase Republican representation in Texas’s U.S. House delegation remain in place. The court’s new unsigned order in League of United Latin American Citizens v. Abbott was issued over the dissents of Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson. Justices Samuel Alito filed an opinion concurring in the order. Justices Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch joined the concurrence.

The Supreme Court took action hours after Texas appealed a federal district court ruling striking down the election map passed earlier this year. Under the federal Voting Rights Act, the state is allowed to file an appeal directly with the Supreme Court, skipping the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
