Senate Appropriations Committee Approves AB 727 Undermines Parental Rights

Measure ‘Funnels Vulnerable Minors’ to Suicide Hotline Run by Trevor Project

CALIRED NEWS–California Family Council reported on Friday, Aug. 29 that the Senate Appropriations Committee, approved AB 727 on Friday, Aug. 29 which undermines parental rights as the measure “funnels venerable minors” to a suicide hotline run by the Trevor Project. The bill now proceeds to a vote by the full California Senate.

Trevor Project counselors routinely refer struggling teens to TrevorSpace, an “online community” for ages 13 to 24 where children are invited to interact with unvetted adults and participate in LGBTQ+ themed clubs. Among these clubs are groups like “Love Sick Lesbains,” “Pansexual Club” and “Genderfluid Support Club” which exposes young teens to adult conversations about sexuality and gender ideology.

“AB 727 is reckless,” said Greg Burt, Vice President of California Family Council. “The state is mandating that minors be directed to organizations that connect 13-year-old children with adults up to 24 years old to discuss sexual topics and gender identity. This is not suicide prevention. This is grooming.

“We know children and teens are hurting. They need to know their lives matter, and they need a safe place to find hope. But that hope isn’t found in the arms of strangers online. It’s found in the arms of their parents, their families, and their faith community. That’s where kids can find truth, love, and genuine protection.”

Riverside Sheriff Chad Blanco and other law enforcement officials in California have warned that AB 727 creates “a pipeline for predators, since anonymous and unsupervised digital interactions are the very conditions predators exploit.  Meanwhile, parents are deliberately cut out of life-and-death conversations with their own children.

“This bill treats loving moms and dads as obstacles to be removed,” Burt said. “Parents are the God given protectors of their kids. Legislators should be strengthening families, not undermining them by turning vulnerable children over to strangers online. AB 727 sacrifices child safety on the altar of LGBTQ+ ideology.”
