As Americans prepare to honor the nation’s fallen heroes this Memorial Day, communities across the country are gathering for tributes that blend patriotism, remembrance, and renewed support for veterans and military families.

From Arlington National Cemetery to small-town Main Streets, this year’s Memorial Day observances come at a time when veterans’ issues remain front and center in Washington.

President Donald Trump is expected to participate in Memorial Day commemorations Monday, including the traditional wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. Thousands of Americans are also expected to attend the annual National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C., while patriotic events are planned nationwide.

The White House issued an official Memorial Day proclamation Friday calling on Americans to honor the sacrifices of those who died defending the nation. In the proclamation, Trump wrote that “the greatest fighting force the world has ever known is built upon the extraordinary service of selfless men and women who safeguard our liberty and preserve our way of life.”

Trump formally proclaimed Memorial Day, May 25, 2026, “a day of prayer for permanent peace” and urged Americans to participate in the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. local time. The proclamation also designated the hour beginning at 11 a.m. as a time for Americans to unite in prayer in honor of fallen service members.

Across the nation, major cities are planning large-scale ceremonies and patriotic events. New York City’s Fleet Week continues through Memorial Day, bringing Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard ships into port while allowing civilians to meet service members and tour military vessels.

Chicago is preparing for one of the nation’s largest Memorial Day parades, while communities across Texas, Florida, and California are organizing remembrance ceremonies, military flyovers, and veteran tributes.

The annual National Memorial Day Concert on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol is set for Sunday evening, featuring performances and tributes honoring military families and fallen heroes.

Meanwhile, the Department of Veterans Affairs is expected to spotlight several ongoing initiatives during the holiday weekend. The agency will host ceremonies at more than 120 VA national cemeteries across the country this weekend to honor Memorial Day, with officials encouraging Americans to pay tribute to fallen service members and reflect on their sacrifices. The events are expected to include wreath layings, moments of silence, memorial speeches, and the placement of American flags at grave sites.

Veterans organizations across the country are using Memorial Day weekend not only to remember the fallen, but also to raise awareness about challenges facing today’s veterans, including homelessness, mental health struggles, and healthcare access.

AAA projects millions of Americans will travel over the long holiday weekend, with many families expected to visit military memorials, cemeteries, and patriotic landmarks as part of the observance.
