Nearly 250 years ago at a meeting hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, fifty-six men entered the valley of decision. As delegates from the thirteen American Colonies, they gathered to consider what course of action they should take after “a long train of abuses” from a tyrannical government had increasingly encroached on their freedoms and threatened to remove them once and for all. The British army and navy had laid siege to Boston and the Americans were resisting. Peace with Britain was still possible, but at what price? As leaders and ministers in their communities, these men had been preaching, based on the Bible, that God made all men free and equal. Now the time had come for them to decide whether to declare independence and start their own nation: Did they really believe in the things they preached?

A Look at the First Great Awakening: Freedom and Liberty

Historians and theologians have identified four religious revivals in American Christian history. The First Great Awakening began in the 1730s and lasted to about 1740. The Second Great Awakening began in the late 18th century and lasted until the middle of the 19th century which came with reform movements. The Third Great Awakening ran from the 1850s-1900s and was characterized by missions, Chautauquas and the Social Gospel. The Fourth Great Awakening happened in the late 1960s and early 1970s and is often referred to as “The Jesus Movement.”

LOS ANGELES, CA–The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum was the site of a Saturday, April 11th Prayer Rally featuring revival, repentance and reformation while the Hope Fest LA that followed focused on salvation, healing and deliverance.
The celebration was opened by Harvest Church Pastor Che Ahn (who has a network of churches and ministries across 60 nations) and Pastor Lou Engle (senior leader of the International House of Prayer) with 50 shofars and a shout of praise.
